Something New

Something New
Something Challenging
I'm planning my entry for the
York Art Association's 42 Annual Juried Exhibition.
I want to do something DIFFERENT.
Something UNIQUE and MEMORABLE.
For years I have played around with making
3D paintings using gallery wrapped canvases.
Painting both sides, adding handles and hinges.
So - I'm going to terminate that
journey of trial and error and
make a SCULPTURE.
with many canvasses. hinges. screws. ribbons and twine.
PLAN DREAM BELIEVE
In my head it is so easy. I can see it.

I wish what was in my head was my REALITY.

I bought the canvasses - 12 of them.
They didn't have the sizes on my plan.
So I had to change & compromise.
That cost a small fortune - I really didn't think this through!
I painted them.
Tied them together with string in the shape I had planned.
Nothing like what was in my head.
But it is what it is.

Put the canvasses together with screws.
That didn't work.

Change of plans
GLUE
to be specific - Dry-Wall Glue

and More Paint

WOW - what was I thinking!

Scanning Artwork

Lately, I have been having such a problem scanning my art. The scans are awful - the art is so much better. Is my scanner going bad? Am I saving it incorrectly? Does anyone have a suggestion? I only have Home Office equipment - an HP Printer Scanner and I import with Windows Live Photo Gallery and use Microsoft Office to manipulate.

Here I've saved it as a JPEG

And here I've saved it as a TIF

Another JPEG

Another TIF

The JPEG files seem more grainy than the TIF - or is it just me?

My scanner sucks, too (sorry for the language).

LOL - I see a trend!

Done With Duffy . . .

I know I said I was done with Duffy - that was wishful thinking! After I turned in the finished art, they requested more changes. I had to totally re-do (3) illustrations and make chages to (5). Changes don't bother me - I am their tool - and I'll do what they want. But finished art is FINISHED.

Am I asking for too much

Am I being unreasonable

and these changes could have been requested when the
pencil sketches were presented.

I just needed to vent. I've made the changes.
But before I "shake it off" I'm posting my process -
the steps I take to my finished art.

STEP 1 - Pencil Sketches

STEP 2 - Watercolor Base

STEP 3 - Colored Pencils (many layers of color)

STEP 4 - Burnishing with the white pencil and Detailing with the black pencil =
FINISHED ART

The Volunteer Artist . . .

Even though it is a rewarding experience,
here are a few more drawbacks to consider:

4. Make the changes that you can - do it without grumbling - remember you are their tool. As for the impossible requests - you just have to
educate them with grace.

And ALWAYS ALWAYS maintain your SENSE of HUMOR!

Just because you know something about ART, doesn't mean you know everything - those people you are working for probably know a lot
 of things that you don't.

Someday, this experience will make a great story in your circle of peers.

The Volunteer Artist . . .

Even though it is a rewarding experience,
here are a few more drawbacks to consider:

3. The people you will work for will think they know what they want, but usually, it's not until you produce the finished art work that they realize what that is.
Then it's "let's change this, and move that, and add this, and take out that".

HAVE PATIENCE

The volunteer Artist . . .

Even though it is a rewarding experience,
here are a few more drawbacks to consider:

2. In general most of the people you will work for know very little about the process of making art. Their only reference is coloring books, and they might even ask you how you colored your drawings. They will ask for impossible things and question your choices, mostly because they want to be involved and want you to believe they know what they are talking about.

BE UNDERSTANDING

The Volunteer Artist . . .

I am completely in favor of volunteering my talents for charitable organizations.
I think sharing God given talents is a responsibility and a privilege.
But, even though it is a rewarding experience,
there are a few drawbacks to consider:

1. Always remember - you are their tool, they can't draw but you can. This is not about you and your creative genius,
it's about you bringing their creative ideas to life.

BE HUMBLE
