Illustrative Experiment

I've drawn and painted my frogs with
colored pencils
markers
gouache, and
watercolors.

Of course Colored Pencils are my favorite
Gouache - I actually like how it looks better than watercolor
Even though watercolor allows layering and blending,
Markers - before I ruled them out completely - I'd try them again using a professional artist brand.

For future projects, I'll try gouache and colored pencil.

Illustration Experiment - Watercolor

And my last illustrative experiment is with watercolor.
I don't think I need say anything about watercolor - everyone has tried this medium.

The colors are bright. Layering is possible.
I don't mind it when painting small illustrations - but larger paintings are very intimidating

Illustration Experiment - Gouache

My Frogs now painted in Gouache.
This is the first time I have tried gouache.

Dries very quick. You have to paint fast if you want to blend even a little. You can't go over a painted area as it lifts off the paint. Reminded me of the tempera paints we used in school - middle school.

The colors are bright! Next up is Watercolors . . .

Illustration Experiment - Markers

My second Illustrative Experiment.
This time I thought I would try Markers
I bought a small set from the office supply store.
Let's see if I can simplify my illustrative style with markers . . .

SIMPLE being the ultimate goal - I have failed.
I tried to lay the colors down in a flat cartoony style -
but my heart and head would not cooperate.
I need depth and contour and layers of color.
I need more colors . . .
more layers . . .
more markers . . .

Illustration Experiment - Colored Pencils

I am conducting an experiment.
An ILLUSTRATION experiment.
I love Colored Pencils.
It has been suggested that they are labor intensive and I should try watercolor or gouache or anything . . .
So - I have drawn some whimsical frogs.
Here they are in colored pencils.

THE DRAWING . . .

THE LAYERING PROCESS . . .
STARTING WITH THE GRAY UNDERPAINTING

I AM USING INEXPENSIVE DRAWING PAPER, NOT THE BEST PAPER FOR COLORED PENCILS

WITH THIS PAPER IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET COMPLETE COVERAGE, EVEN WITH ALL THE LAYERS

FINISH UP WITH WHITE FOR BLENDING AND BLACK FOR DRAMA

LAYERING WITH COLORED PENCILS IS "LABOR INTENSIVE".
YOU CAN'T JUST SMEAR IT ON WITH A BRUSH LOADED WITH WET PAINT.
YOU MUST BE SLOW, GENTLE AND PRECISE.
AS LONG AS YOU ACCEPT THIS  - THE PROCESS IS RELAXING AND MEDITATIVE.
