The Tree of Life, acrylic and mixed media

I went to work painting the tree.
Just the tree was not enough, so I added the Life - the Fruit, the Foliage, the Critters. All the symbols of Life are my own colored pencil drawings, collaged to the tree, except for the girls (copies of my original art) and the cards (copies of post cards) which are color copies. I used fabric for the grass and flowers on the ground.

YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE UNIVERSE. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO EXIST.
YOU HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO GROW TO BE YOURSELF.

The Tree of Life painted with acrylic and mixed media

This tree has so much character. Branches with a purpose. Tall. Bold. Sturdy. A Presence. A Tree of Life. (Genesis2:9 and 3:22-24).

The Tree of Life has to be Imposing. It has a responsibility as do I, the artist. I didn't know where to begin.

So, I started with a background of layered acrylic glazes and stencils. I thought some tree stencils might be appropriate.

Book Review - The Art of Maurice Sendak

What an awesome career Sendak had. This big book is packed with samples of his illustrations - children's book, posters, theater design, opera - plus a look at his creative inspiration.

"Creator of Where the Wild Things AreIn the Night KitchenHigglety Pigglety Pop!, and the illustrations for dozens of other memorable children's books, Maurice Sendak has ranked among the best-known and best-loved artists in America for nearly thirty years. Now his life and work are explored in affectionate detail in this charming, fun-filled book, enticingly illustrated with hundreds of the award-winning illustrator's fantasy sketches, black-and-white squiggly line drawings, full-color fold-outs, and working dummies of his most important works. "

Art Journal to Painting Trees.

My previous painting was of trees. A large group of trees with autumn foliage. Spread completely across the horizontal canvas. The entire time I was painting this I was plagued by a photo of a tree I had found in my reference file.

It spoke to me. Mused me.
I added it to my journal.
I knew I would paint this tree.

Painting Trees

The shadows are hiding the words.
The words are hiding in the shadows.
Done. Done for now.
Maybe tomorrow I won't be done, but for now I'll celebrate!
