August 28, 2008 Mini Collage ACEO ATC

"UNTITLED ON PURPOSE" - ACEO - the size of the traditional ATC (Artist Trading Card) 3.5 x 2.3.
This collage was created on 120lb watercolor paper. The background is acrylic paint, brushed, dripped, and drizzled on. The body of the collage is mainly dried acrylic paint peeled from my palette. The King of Spades is from a miniature deck of playing cards.

I have often incorporated dried palette paint in my collages. Naturally they lend themselves quite well to the acrylic medium I use to adhere them.

This ACEO and the previous (3) were sold on eBay to a buyer interested in magic. I never considered the playing cards would spark the interest of a magician. What luck that he found them in his searches.

August 24, 2008 Whimsical Collage

"Come To Alice's Dinner" Another in my second
series of collages - these are whimsical, they are not what you might expect and
sometimes require a second look. This collage measures 5" x 7", postcard format,
and is created with founds papers mounted on 120# watercolor paper.
This was an exercise in
putting together unusual combinations - to make it whimsical. I changed not only
faces but sometimes facial features. I was limited by my choice of papers I
could use - there was no perusing through the magazines - I had to use the
collection of found papers in front of me, This fabulous period photo just cried
out - Alice in Wonderland. I have a deck of miniature playing cards that added
the perfect touch.

August 18, 2008 Colored Pencils

"Pile of Rocks"

This is a colored pencil painting, measures 8 x 12, and was created on Smooth Bristol Board.

I completed most of this painting as a demo during the "Christmas in August" bazaar at the York Art Association. It gave the viewers the opportunity to see how colored pencils are not used like crayons when we were children - the colors are created with many layers of different colored pencils, it is a slow precise process - personally it is like meditation.

August 13, 2008 Abstract Landscape

"Third Farm". This little rural landscape is a mix of both realism and abstract painting. It was created with acrylic paint and tissue paper under the paint for additional texture. It was painted on a 5" square gallery wrapped canvas. I've finished a series of three, and will be showing them this weekend at the York Art Association's "Christmas in August" this weekend.

August 5, 2008 Abstract Collage

POST CARD COLLAGE - "In Case You Missed the Sunrise".
This collage measures 5 x 7" and was created with tissue paper, mulberry paper, and acrylic paint. In addition to the size being part of the exercise, in this collage I limited myself to only 3 colors - blue, green, and yellow. "Less is more". The point of this exercise is to limit the choices and decisions in regard to size, color, and materials - that allows more time for creativity.
