City Sunrise Colored Pencil

Abstract Colored Pencil

This painting is conceptual and was designed on the go as I drew it on the paper. My initial thought was the abstracted city skyline during a sunrise. Using bright warm colors kept the city in the foreground and as the focus. The rest of the landscape just happened as I drew, the fish, the shoes, and the pigeons. Their color palette is cool and receding.

Colored Pencil Epic Fail

Not every painting is successful. I've always been intrigued by the shoes thrown over power lines. So during this pandemic I thought of using vintage nurses shoes in this scenario as a tribute to our medical personnel. This colored pencil painting took many hours,
and I really like the simple palette.

However - here the other shoe drops - it appears only a senior like me, would recognize these shoes. I asked a GenX-er for a critique. She knew they were old shoes but not nurses shoes. She said nurses wear crocs now. And to add insult to injury, she said shoes thrown over the power lines meant there was a drug dealer in the area.
Ugh!! Double Ugh!!

Good Old Days in Colored Pencil

Using all the primary colors in my palette,
I've created a nostalgic painting,
my "Good Old Days",
with a Peter Max homage.

Colored Pencil Reflections

Here I sit, at the end of winter - a long winter thanks to our ground hog prediction - wishing for the change of season and the addition of color. So I painted some color, lots of color, cause that's my palette!

Think Spring with Colored Pencils

Spring Onions and Asparagus
Painting during our last snow storm, always in March, longing for Spring and Summer and color. We had asparagus for dinner, thus the inspiration for this conceptual still life.

Colored Pencil Junk Drawer

MY JUNK DRAWER
This is a very detailed, industrious, busy painting of my junk drawer. I am entering a contest where the competition will be fierce. I needed a painting that would catch an eye, something unexpected and different from the norm. I hope this will do the trick.

Before the burnishing . . .

my own photo . . .

Colored Pencil Landscape

The holidays are over, decorations packed away for another year, and sadly the last Godiva chocolate eaten. Time to get back to work.

This was the perfect colored pencil painting to bring in the new year 2022. Warm and inviting, not at all like the cold and bleak view from our wintery window.

14 x 11 on Strathmore Bristol, Prismacolor pencils.

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

So - the cover for this book needed to be fun.
Of course the palette is colorful.
I choose this surreal pencil still life,
almost realistic, but then - not.

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

The illustrated children's picture book.
There are many illustrations required for a picture book.
To insure consistency throughout the book, I can't work on just one illustration at a time. I usually work on all of them simultaneously. If I am working on the sky, I paint the sky on all the pages at one sitting to make sure the colors I use are the same on every page.
I have learned that the eye of a child reader is very
discerning and will find even the smallest boo-boo!

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

Every year I create my own Christmas card.
The illustration with the swan decoy was used by the
Baltimore Sun Newspaper in 1990. With my love of primary colors -
Xmas cards are my favorite!

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

Abstract colored pencil art.
This is an example of how diverse colored pencils are. You are not just committed to realistic still liges or portraits of youe neighbor's pet cat. You can do anything, even abstract.
I created texture in this painting by making impressions in the paper.

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

As you might have noticed, I favor
anthropomorphic animals. In this painting,
I have turned the tables and given
my lady rabbit features, all with just colored pencils.

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

This colored pencil illustration is for the cover of
Barbara Gorski's chapter book,
The Solisbell Adventure.
Children's literature lends itself to my whimsical style and
palette of bright primary colors.

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

I am very partial to whimsical colorful illustrations.
Here's an example below. I started with a pen and ink drawing, added watercolor washes and finished with colored pencils.

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

Collage and Colored Pencils
This collage was homage to my birthday sign, LEO.
I drew lion masks and lion fish and spelled out LEO with the scrabble tiles.
The benefit of using cut out colored pencil drawings is
I can remove them if there are too many, or draw more if needed.
So much easier than painting.

FUN WITH COLORED PENCILS

Colored Pencil collages.
Each Kewpie doll is cut out separately. As you can see on the right column ~ I moved the dolls around until I found the composition I liked the best.
The beach umbrellas were made from cocktail napkins.
