Now to finish the collage paintings. I glued the colorful pieces that I cut from my first journal book.

If you look closely you can recognize some of my drawings that came from my journal pages.

Back to the Art Journal manuscript. I stepped away from it for a few days. So now with fresh eyes I once again combed through it, and still found things I need to change. I imagine this could go on forever. I was satisfied with the design and felt this time I was really done. I sent it back to Amazon's Createspace and waited for their reply.

I started collaging my book pieces.

I began with the neutral colored scraps.

Cutting my new book into tiny little pieces was very therapeutic. It gave me time to calm down and re-think my book. It was fixable. I went trough it with a fine tooth comb and found the typos and re-wrote some passages.The biggest change was the design. I doubled the pages. spread it out. Gave it some more white space, made it easier on the eye. Then I sat it aside and will come back to it in a day or two.

Then, in keeping with my therapy, I started two canvases for my collages. I painted the background and glued pages from an old dictionary and tags. When these dry, I'll be ready to add the collage pieces I cut out of my new book.

Judy's Journal Journey

On my 2016 Bucket List, I wanted to self-publish this Art Journal book. I've been working on it for years and decided enough was enough - get it done. Get it done before the end of the year. November and December were very busy months for me. But I was able to self-publish this book before Christmas!

Published on Amazon. My copies were ordered and I was stoked.

But not for long. I received my copies. I was so disappointed. I hated it. Too busy. Too crowded. Typos. Discouraged. I'm used to rejection, but not my own. In hindsight, there were so many things I should have done - first being better editing. I should not have rushed to finish just to meet an ambiguous deadline. That's the end of publishing for me. I won't be doing this again.

I took the book I had just received in the mail and proceeded to tear it up. I'm not totally crazy. I methodically destroyed the pages, cutting them up in various shapes and sizes. I was planning a collage made from my disappointing book.

I added some cut paper from my collage paper stash.
If my journal art couldn't make a good book,
at least it would look good in a collage painting.

I feel like I’ve read all the books about Art Journals ever written. There are a gazillion ways to journal. Everyone of them is the correct way. There is no wrong way to journal. I would be hard pressed to recommend just one of these books as they are all valuable for various and diverse reasons.

That’s why I decided not to include any “how-to’s” in my book. Instead my book is about my journey. Why I journal and how I journal. The thoughts running through my head, the motivation and the inspiration that helped create my journal pages.
